These Book of Shadows pages of herbs and their magickal purposes are a rich resource for any magickal practitioner, no matter what level or type of magick you practice. They have been curated and researched over decades for my own magickal use and for this online tome. I'm honored to pass them on to you.

These pages are extensive. Because of that, you might find some herbs that don't yet have their own detailed page. Just know that they are being worked on and I appreciate your patience.

General Information on the Use of Magickal Herbs

Every herb, plant, food, and tree has its own energetic vibration that lends itself to certain outcomes when used with a catalyst, like a candle, sigil, mortar and pestle, or even a simple clear thought form. Although many herbs overlap in their energies, they will still have their subtle differences in how they feel.

A good example is how many magickal herbs can be used for the general purpose of "Protection." But they don't all necessarily give out the same kind of protection. Some are obvious, like "Protection against legal troubles," or "Protection from physical harm."

If it's clear what kind of protection a specific herb gives, it will be listed with the herb, but sometimes you'll need to look at the planetary and elemental associations in order to understand the herb's purpose in more depth.

If you're unfamiliar with planetary associations, click here.

If you're unfamiliar with elemental associations, you can find those by clicking here. (Both links will open a new tab so you won't lose this page.)

Pro tip: Herbs like to be stored in glass jars or wooden containers whenever possible. Touching them with plastic or metal is a bit insulting to them, so whenever possible, use a wooden or stone spoon specifically meant only for your herbs. Keep them out of direct sunlight because the Sun will 'burn' away the herb's energy. Placing them in a cupboard or set of drawers is the best practice.

Treat your herbs with respect, as if they are their own entity (because they are), and they will work magick with you.

How to Use This Page

Below you'll see two different ways that you can look up magickal herbs -  alphabetically by name of course, but also by purpose.

You can incorporate herbs into your magick rituals:

  • by using them to make purpose oils or herbal mixes,
  • surrounding your ritual candle with them,
  • placing them on top of an activated Sigil for that extra push,
  • or even making a tea out of the herbs and plants that are ingest-able.

Beware of the herbs with their names in red. They are poisonous in one form or another and need to be used with extreme caution (or not used at all). Herbs with their names in Orange have parts of the plant that are poisonous.

Herbs Alphabetically by their Common Names

Below is an alphabetical list of some common (and uncommon) magickal herbs. Clicking a specific name will open a new tab with that herb's own page and information. (If a name is not clickable, it just means I'm still working on it.)
